    Traditions, Unity Candle

    September 20, 2016

Used in many faith based ceremonies, the Unity Candle is often a part of secular ceremonies as well. It is based on three candles; the first two are smaller candles on either side of the larger, central candle. One represents the life “flame” or “fire” of the bride and the other of the groom.  These two candles are typically lit at the beginning of the wedding ceremony or if not convenient, at the beginning of the Candle Ceremony.  The larger central candle represents the “flame”, “fire”, or “energy” of the couple together. The bride and groom each remove their respective candles from the holder or candelabra, and simultaneously light the center candle, signifying their new unity as one.
