Traditions, First Dance

Though not a universal tradition, the first dance of a bride and groom is a typical part of American and European wedding receptions which include dancing. It is routed in the custom of the guests of honor opening the dancing at a ball. It also symbolizes the beginnings of married life and formation of a new family. The first dance of the couple is typically followed by the bride dancing with her father, and the groom his mother. Then parents with one another with the wedding party joining in.
