Jewelry, Tungsten
Tungsten is an element that is mainly used in industrial applications. Tungsten by itself will shatter and crack due to its hardness. It does not gain its extreme durability until combined with a carbon alloy, creating Tungsten Carbide, which is four times harder than titanium, twice as hard as steel, and is virtually impossible to scratch. Its dark color is appealing to many people, as well.
Tungsten carbide jewelry provides extreme durability and substantial weight but like titanium, has the liability of being too hard to size, and potential to shatter if dropped. Tungsten carbide rings can scratch other objects when they come into contact in the wearer’s hand, jewelry box, etc. so care should be taken to keep them separate from other jewelry.
